“Letter to Metro Lutheran”

Pr. Don Docken

6 May 2010

To the Editor:

The present church controvery is more critical and fundamental than some of those cited by Michael Sherer in the May issue of Metro Lutheran. The reason is that the ELCA rejected the teaching and authority of Jesus Himself. In Matt. 19:4-6. Jesus says, Have you not read that the one who made them at the beginning, made them male and female, and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate." It is clear that Jesus intended a sexual union be between a man and a woman not between same sexes. Jesus was a Jew and in the first century Judaism condemned same sex unions. If Jesus wanted to make an exception, he would have qualified the premise similar to what he did with the Sabbath. What Jesus said should be followed by his church. Therefore the Central Lutheran church of Elk River is in the right, not the breakway Elk River Lutheran.
